Written soon after the #MeToo movement entered the national conversation, this momentous, touching, and laugh-out-loud funny play explores themes of trust, betrayal, and the abuse of power as experienced by a group of high school friends. Set in a small Georgia town where everybody knows everybody else’s business, John Proctor Is the Villain focuses on the students in a high school literature class, and particularly on a group of girls who have strong and sometimes complicated friendships with each other. As the students discuss Arthur Miller’s The Crucible with their beloved teacher Mr. Smith – and as they explore, in an after-school club, what feminism means to them – they begin to see echoes between this classic American play about the Salem witch trials and events unfolding in their world. As those events come to a shocking climax, their assessment of the heroes and villains in The Crucible, and in their own lives, changes forever.

The University of Michigan’s Baroque Chamber Orchestra studies and performs repertoire from the late Renaissance, Baroque, and the early Classical periods. While directed by faculty members Aaron Berofsky, baroque violin, and Joseph Gascho, harpsichord/organ, many performances are led by the students themselves. Using period instruments and replicas from the university’s growing Stearns Collection, the musicians gain vital hands-on experience and learn about the history and context of early music and performance practice.

The Chamber Choir performs 6-8 concerts annually in both Hill Auditorium and in special settings, such as the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), and is often featured at high profile U-M special events. The Chamber Choir has been featured on GRAMMY-winning and GRAMMY-nominated albums; sung with the Detroit and Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestras; and has toured internationally. Berliner Philharmoniker

Concert Band provides large ensemble performance experiences in a wide range of musical styles and periods for all wind and percussion performers at U-M. The music performed includes works for both chamber and large ensemble works and is selected to provide challenging opportunities for musical growth. The Concert Band performs three concerts per semester.

Primarily for non-music majors who desire a concert band experience, the University and Campus Bands are open to the entire U-M community and offer a great opportunity to enjoy an immersive musical experience and to learn from SMTD’s renowned faculty. The University Band is the most advanced non-music-major band and placement is by audition. Campus Band is open to any student with experience.

The Michigan Youth Trombone Ensemble (MYTE), under the direction of Professor David Jackson, provides students advanced experience in performing a variety of trombone ensemble repertoire. Students will work with current U-M trombone students to strengthen their overall musicianship, learn new repertoire, and participate in collaborative music making through weekly rehearsals. The Michigan Youth Trombone Ensemble is open by audition to high-school aged trombonists.

This is a unique, largely improvisation-based group that invites interaction with other performance fields such as dance, theatre, and music technology.

Creative Arts Orchestra

The Arts Chorale is the official choir of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. It provides a fun and enriching environment for students who enjoy singing. A mixed choir that is open to any U-M student, the Arts Chorale is a musical and social group that has existed at the University for over 60 years. Although affiliated with SMTD, most members are not music majors.

Women’s Glee Club Fall Concert

The Michigan Youth Chamber Singers (MYCS) is a select SATB choir composed of outstanding vocalists from across the region. Students interact with U-M SMTD faculty and graduate students to perform challenging standard chamber choir repertoire. MYCS is open to advanced high-school aged singers as part of the Michigan Youth Ensembles program.

The MYPE and MYSB are part of the Michigan Youth Ensembles (MYE) program, which brings together exceptional high school students for weekly rehearsals at SMTD. MYE Students, who are selected by audition, have the opportunity to engage in a stimulating environment, while learning from U-M conductors, applied faculty, and graduate students.

The GRAMMY-nominated University of Michigan Percussion Ensemble has commissioned, performed, and recorded works from a global array of musical cultures. Many of the compositions it has premiered have gone on to enter the standard percussion canon.

The Michigan Youth Philharmonia Orchestra (MYPO) is a string-only orchestra, open to students between grades 6 (six) through 8 (eight) for the 2024-2025 academic year. Students participate in weekly rehearsals, working with current SMTD Faculty and Students, preparing and performing challenging string orchestra repertoire.

With a string section comprising all freshmen, the Philharmonia Orchestra provides student musicians an immersive opportunity to improve their large ensemble skills and play some of the greatest works in the symphonic repertoire.

University Philharmonia Orchestra

Join us for an unforgettable evening with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra as we present the November MainStage event, featuring the extraordinary talents of cellist Sterling Elliott. Making his Ann Arbor debut, Elliott will perform Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, a masterpiece considered by many to be the greatest concerto ever composed for the instrument. This event will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 8 PM at the Michigan Theater, with a pre-concert talk scheduled for 7 PM.

Sterling Elliott, recipient of the 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant and winner of the 2019 National Sphinx Competition, is celebrated for his striking stage presence and eloquence of expression. His performance is eagerly anticipated as he brings his unique interpretation to Dvořák’s concerto. In addition to Elliott's performance, the evening will be under the baton of Music Director Earl Lee, featuring György Kurtág’s Ligatura Message-Hommage à Frances-Marie Uitti The Answered Unanswered Question, and Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, a work praised for its artistic perfection.

This genre-defying composer and drummer takes the stage for a performance featuring pieces from his acclaimed album Mesmerism, which showcases the joy of improvising over songs from the Great American Songbook, in a return to his musical roots after a career steeped in the avant-garde. The goal, he explains, was to “document the unwavering love and appreciation I have for [my favorite songs from the Great American songbook] in the most honest, earnest way I can, as well as those by composers whose work I feel should also exist in this canon.” The 2017 MacArthur Fellow and 2023 Pulitzer Prize finalist is “an extraordinary talent who can see across the entire musical landscape.” (The New Yorker) Sorey makes his UMS debut as a bandleader, with two sets featuring his trio, including pianist Aaron Diehl and bass player Matt Brewer, at the Blue LLama Jazz Club in downtown Ann Arbor.
