Composer, conductor, and creative thinker John Adams occupies a unique position in the world of music. His works stand out among contemporary classical compositions for their depth of expression, brilliance of sound, and the profoundly humanist nature of their themes. For his oratorio El Niño, Adams imagines a modern-day miracle, retelling the story of the Messiah through a constellation of references from medieval chant to contemporary Latin American poetry. “John Adams's nativity oratorio is a winner, a very palpable hit — an intelligent, emotional and sometimes magical re-telling of the old, old story from a new perspective” (BBC).

Stravinsky’s Firebird set Paris aflame at its 1910 premiere, catapulting its composer to worldwide fame. Commissioned by Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev for his era-defining Ballets Russes it drew upon more than a dozen Russian folk characters to create an ultimate fairy tale, a story of princes, princess, and a magical firebird that was memorably realized in Disney’s Fantasia 2000. Rising star Stefan Jackiw opens with Britten’s riveting Violin Concerto, which the 25-year-old composer wrote amid budding romance and threatening war, and called “without question my best piece,” to that point.

In the early years of his young adult life C S Lewis believed the story of Christ’s birth was nothing more than feel-good myth. That all changed after a particular encounter with his great friend and fellow author, J R R Tolkien. Although both men loved mythology in general, Tolkien was convinced that the Jesus myth was the one true myth. That was the start of Lewis’ journey from Atheism to Christianity. From that point on Christmas, for Lewis, took on an entirely different meaning. Here we find him at his home near Oxford on Christmas Eve hosting a group of Americans who are Christmassing in England.
