Noon Concert Series: Songs and Dances: Marsh and Titterington Piano Duo

Join professors Ethan Sperry and Coty Raven Morris with the Portland State University Chamber Choir, Thorn Choir, and Rose Choir for an evening of music that spans space and time. Our concert includes selections from North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia; and is bookended with music by female composers Hildegard von Bingen from the Middle Ages and Elaine Hagenberg, our most popular living composer. Audience members will also enjoy the world premiere of “My Father Digging,” composed by PSU professor Darrell Grant, based on the beloved poem “Digging” by Seamus Heaney, with guest solo artist esperanza spalding. Written as Stalin's Great Terror campaign made music a matter of life and death for Soviet composers, Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony is a searing search for hope in a time of darkness and oppression. Fear and vulnerability also hover over Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto, its hushed laments and demonic dissonances mirroring the composer's anguish upon his imminent return to the Soviet Union.

Seaborne (by Emmy-award winner composer Garth Neustadter) features coordination with live film projection, and for this piece, we're featuring graduate collaborative pianist Charlie Copeland and undergraduate pianist AJ Allida. "Above" is the first movement of a three-movement work, which was premiered by The Percussion Collective. Log Cabin Blues is a ragtime xylophone work by George Hamilton Green featuring percussion major Andrés Pinzón as xylophone soloist. Double Drum Dutch is a recently-composed work by Ayanna Woods, and was commissioned and premiered by Chicago's GRAMMY-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion. Lastly, Kangaroopak Sardha by Terry Longshore will feature the entire ensemble and is based on both North and South Indian traditional forms and rhythms.

Composer Danny Elfman and visionary Hollywood filmmaker Tim Burton have created a unique concert experience, lending music and visuals to celebrate the 25-year partnership of two of Hollywood’s top creators. Experience Tim Burton’s original sketches, drawings, and storyboards on the big screen while Danny Elfman’s famous film scores are performed live by the Oregon Symphony.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Discover the captivating journey of the trumpet in "The Royal Trumpeter: Kris’ Podium," a highlight of the Portland Baroque Orchestra's 2024-25 season. Curated by Principal Trumpet Kris Kwapis, this program explores the trumpet's transformation from a battlefield instrument to a symbol of expressive virtuosity. Set against the vibrant backdrop of late seventeenth-century London, the performance showcases the trumpet's prominence in England's regal courts, accompanied by strings, winds, and voices. The evening features the works of renowned composers such as Henry Purcell, William Croft, and John Eccles, whose compositions reflect the grandeur and sophistication of an era marked by royal patronage. Highlights include Purcell's Act II Symphony from "The Indian Queen," Croft's Overture from "Ode for the Peace of Utrecht," and Eccles' Suite Made for the Queen’s Coronation.
