Hannibal orders nothing but hanging. His days drag on boringly while his grandmother knits chickens, and his parents endlessly tell how healthy boys made time pass in the old days. All the citizens of Vejlby, a small, peaceful town in central Jutland, are shaken. The priest has had an argument with his fellow, Niels, who has now disappeared without a trace. The town's new and inexperienced district bailiff, who is also the priest's future son-in-law, is forced to solve the case. But as the investigation begins and the events unfold, skeletons come out of the closet, and a grim story of old grudges, spurned love and frayed morals sees the light of day.

Morning traffic is in chaos. A giant pepper mill, made from oil drums, is blocking Frederikssundsvej, one of Copenhagen’s main arteries. Florist Tobias is convinced it must be for him—it is, after all, his 30th birthday today, and in Denmark, a giant pepper mill is a traditional gift for those who reach that age unmarried. But neither his employer nor any of his three closest friends have arranged for a pepper mill in his honour. In fact, they had almost forgotten his birthday altogether. Because friends grow up, start families of their own—and suddenly, you find yourself alone in life.
