Olivier Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony is a work that has it all. Inspired by both Hindu scriptures and the medieval tale of Tristan and Isolde, the symphony is intoxicating and seductive, terrifying and beautiful in equal measure. The intensely colorful sound universe with a full percussion section, a virtuoso piano voice and the early electronic instrument ondes martenot is unparalleled in the history of music.

Richard Strauss could shock when he wanted to, and he did so to the fullest with the one-act Salome . In the opera, the young princess Salome asks for the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter, to music that is both seductive and disgusting. To get her way, she must dance the Dance of the Seven Veils for her stepfather, King Herod.

Robert Carsen’s acclaimed and timely staging of Mozart’s Idomeneo returns to the Opera House.

Idomeneo was Mozart’s first great opera, composed in 1781 by a 25-year-old genius as a festive commission for the Elector’s new theatre in Munich. Mozart’s creativity knew no bounds, and this extraordinary score places immense demands on both soloists and the grand opera chorus.

Josephine Park stars as Yerma in a gripping drama about a modern woman’s all-consuming desire for a child—and the lengths she will go to in pursuit of her dream.

What do you do when you have every opportunity in life, yet your greatest wish remains unfulfilled?

Yerma is a successful city woman in full control of her life. She has never considered having children—until the day she moves into her new townhouse. Suddenly, the desire arises: there is plenty of space, after all. She persuades her partner, and together they try for years to conceive.

As their efforts prove unsuccessful, she restructures their work and private lives around her ovulation cycles. She shares intimate details of their struggle with infertility and family pressures on social media, while her partner gradually loses interest in fertility treatments—and in their relationship. The key of C minor represented something particularly dramatic in Beethoven, and this evening the key runs like a stormy, red thread through the program. In Symphony No. 5, fate itself knocks on the door, and the entire work seethes with energy and intensity, before the darkness is finally overcome and it all ends in bright triumph.
