Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel, renowned for his eclectic blend of jazz and collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Prince and Kneebody, joins forces with Grammy-winning pianist Taylor Eigsti, whose prodigious talent has graced stages alongside legends like Dave Brubeck and Sting. Enjoy a dynamic fusion of styles and a celebration of musical mastery.

Your Madison Symphony Orchestra’s first MSO at the Movies of the season presents Disney and Pixar’s Coco in Concert featuring a screening of the complete film with Oscar® and Grammy®-winning composer Michael Giacchino’s musical score performed live to the film. In addition to the original score by Giacchino, “Coco” also features the Oscar®-winning song “Remember Me” by Oscar-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and additional songs co-written by Germaine Franco and co-director and screenwriter Adrian Molina.

We begin with Michael Stern making his MSO debut as guest conductor leading Jonathan Leshnoff’s Rush for Orchestra, a driving and exciting work that builds a tremendous amount of energy throughout. Garrick Ohlsson, an audience and orchestra favorite, makes his eighth appearance with us performing Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a romantic masterpiece infused with the spirit of his Norwegian homeland. Dmitri Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 5, which he humbly described as “the practical answer of a Soviet artist to justified criticism” in a subtle and bitter reaction to the Russia of Joseph Stalin, brings this concert to a close.

Join us in Capitol Theater as we kick off the 2024/25 Masterworks season with a fiery display of masterful musicianship. We open with a gem from the classical era by German composer and Mozart contemporary Carl P. Stamitz with Symphony in C Major, Op. 13/16 No. 5. This work provides a beautiful prequel for the return of Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska, joining the orchestra to illuminate Beethoven’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 4 in G. The evening will close with Symphony No. 3 in G minor by mid-nineteenth century composer Louise Farrenc. Serving as professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire for over 20 years, Farrenc's musical language is compelling, and steeped in the Romantic French tradition.
