I feel extremely fortunate to call the RPO my hometown orchestra – an orchestra that can not only blow the roof off Kodak Hall but can equally touch the lives of so many underprivileged and underserved communities throughout Rochester with great meaning, compassion, and empathy.

I’m incredibly proud to have been asked this year to lead the RPO Centennial Season’s “100 Acts of Giving Back,” a yearlong initiative designed to focus on the transformative work we do off the stage – with our local educational, community, and Care & Wellness partners – by sharing music that moves us with the communities that inspire us all. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this incredible journey for the past 30 years!”

Enjoy cocktails and a specially selected multi-course dinner with program at The Wilder Room followed by an outstanding concert, then return to The Wilder Room and continue the celebration with desserts and dancing with your RPO musicians!

Proceeds from this signature event will support the RPO’s Education programs.

The Artelize Podcast and Adolfo Corrado: Mediterranean flavors, opera and social media

To celebrate 30 years with the RPO, Principal Pops conductor Jeff Tyzik keeps it a family affair! You’ll hear “stars” from your RPO including Juliana Athayde, Erik Behr and Ken Grant all playing pieces written specifically for them by Maestro Tyzik during his tenure. The party will also feature other Rochester connections including Herb Smith performing Chuck Mangione’s The Feel of a Vision and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite arranged by Robert Russell Bennett and featuring bass Kevin Deas, a frequent guest of the RPO. Plus, Rochester’s own soprano Kearstin Piper Brown joins the fun, as does Madrigalia, now in its 45th season!

30 Years of Jeff Tyzik!

Experience music of power. And of passion. Music Director Andreas Delfs leads this all-Tchaikovsky celebration. The “1812 Overture” roars through Kodak Hall. Music from Swan Lake enchants. And Olga Kern brings the romantic First Piano Concerto home to Rochester, where she made her acclaimed recording of the piece in 2003. “Blazing and breathtaking,” declared SF Gate.

International vocal powerhouse and Broadway star Shayna Steele brings her eclectic style of soul and blues honoring the musical divas who inspired her: Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, and more. Shayna also shares her original music and Jeff Tyzik’s arrangements with a classic soul edge to the stage, reminding us why she’s a modern American Diva in her own right.

Be there as your Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra opens its second century in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre! Andreas Delfs conducts one of Beethoven’s towering achievements—the mighty Symphony Number Three, the “Eroica.” The dazzling Alisa Weilerstein plays Elgar’s achingly poignant Cello Concerto. The concert begins with the world premiere of a new work by Aaron Jay Kernis written to celebrate your RPO’s Centennial Season.

Music Director Andreas Delfs conducts Gustav Mahler’s savage and sublime Fifth Symphony, famed for its heart-wrenching Adagietto. And The New York Times reports that Eric Owens, “speaks to you even in his silences… and shakes you when he sings.” Hear him perform Mahler’s folk-poetry influenced “Songs of a Wayfarer.”

An American masterpiece, Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story tells of cultures colliding, a theme that plays out across this program. Declared by Mahler himself to be “the start of modern music,” Chabrier’s España is paired with Lalo’s rhapsodic Cello Concerto to make up the first half of the program. The first American in four decades and youngest musician ever to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition Cello Division, Zlatomir Fung, joins the RPO as soloist. Roberto Sierra’s colorful Fandangos, a rhythmic piece inspired by the triple meter Spanish dance, follows the Bernstein to end the lively evening.

Broadway comes to Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre as Music Director Andreas Delfs leads your RPO down the Great White Way. Enjoy classic and popular Rodgers & Hammerstein tunes well-known from some of the most outstanding productions ever to hit the stage!

Music Director of the RPO from 1974 to 1985, David Zinman returns to Rochester to conduct the music of Samuel Barber and Brahms’ poetic Second Symphony. And, Sibelius’ bracing Violin Concerto is performed by soloist Karen Gomyo, of whom the Sydney Morning News raves “play[s] with golden radiance.”

Back to the 80s is a power packed evening of the decade’s #1 hit songs, including The Power of Love, Time After Time, Material Girl, Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Footloose, Addicted to Love and many others. Featuring the music of such 80s iconic stars as Madonna, Debbie Gibson, Huey Lewis & The News, Phil Collins, Joe Cocker, Elton John and others, Back to the 80s contains all new arrangements by Grammy-winner and Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik and features three incredible vocalists.

The toe-tapping, finger-snapping program shines the spotlight on the music of great early 20th century composers, including George Gershwin (Fascinating Rhythm), Irving Berlin (Alexander’s Ragtime Band), and Isham Jones (It Had To Be You), that have the timeless melodies and rhythms that continue to lift our spirits today. Joined by world-renowned jazz vocalist Sydney McSweeney, Byron creates an inspiring musical portrait of how these songs shaped the Great American Songbook.

Completed in 1894, Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony was the first significant work exploring his lifelong perspectives of the afterlife and established him as a leading composer of his day. An all-embracing work, it is the first of Mahler’s symphonies to use voices, words, and orchestra to create a musical experience that will stay with you far beyond the concert hall. Join us as we sound the trumpets and ring the bells for this grand Season Finale!
