Michigan-born and now Nashville-based, Billy Strings is a GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician, who arrived on the scene as “one of string music’s most dynamic young stars” (Rolling Stone). Billy Strings’ 2022 tour further celebrates the release of Strings’ widely acclaimed new album, Renewal, out now via Rounder Records. With the record’s sixteen tracks, Strings shares a more personal and honest perspective through his songwriting, while incorporating his wide range of influences with elements of bluegrass, classic rock, metal, psychedelic music and more.

In KŌSA - between two mirrors, the world-renowned Butoh dance troupe Sankai Juku explores themes of anxiety and grief in the visceral, captivating cadence they are known best for. Directed, choreographed, and designed by Ushio Amagatsu, the group’s founder, this piece is a meditation on the anxieties acutely felt by many in the past few years. With KŌSA, excerpts of Amagatsu’s previous masterpieces come together in Memorial Auditorium to create a catharsis to behold.

Ever since the 2003 release of her debut, Another Mind, Hiromi has electrified audiences with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Her new project “Sonicwonder” is an electrified 4-piece band with heavy groove, featuring Adam O'Farrill on trumpet, Hadrien Feraud on bass, and Gene Coye on drums.

Joe Russo's Almost Dead returns to Frost Amphitheater for their 2023 tour. The Grateful Dead played at Frost Amphitheater 14 times in the 80s, and its fitting that their tribute band continues the tradition. "Not only does this quintet play tight and vicious versions of some of the most complex songs in the Grateful Dead's repertoire, but they play them with a rawness & energy absent from the stage since the 'Live' Dead era."

In this concert of contrasts and connections, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra showcases Handel's music for the stage, always recognizable by its emotional clarity, and at the heart of the evening place a duo of compositions exploring the creation story by two of today’s most powerful musical voices: Errollyn Wallen and PBO’s Composer in Residence Tarik O’Regan. Star British countertenor Tim Mead reprises these powerful performances in the Bay Area following acclaimed concerts in the United Kingdom last summer.

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra

South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma is a curatorial visionary who merges movement, theater, dance, visuals, and music with a sense of pulse and breath. Featuring four soloists and an onstage a cappella chorus, Maqoma’s new work tells the story of a South African–based chorus whose tour through North America and England in the late 19th century was marred by the realities of racism. The piece concretizes the burden of the white gaze and what it feels like to move beyond the constricting box it constructs.

Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros was formed in 2018 by Weir along with Don Was and Jay Lane. The band set out performing the expansive catalog of Grateful Dead, Bobby's solo albums, and more. Bobby Weir is a founding member of the legendary Grateful Dead and Dead & Company and is one of rock’s finest, most distinctive rhythm guitarists and singers. Weir has received a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award and has been honored by the Americana Music Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Bobby Weir and the Wolfpack will be joined by the Stanford Symphony Orchestra on the Frost Amphitheater stage.

The Stanford Wind Symphony and Stanford Jazz Orchestra team up to present the annual Halloween Concert in Dinkelspiel Auditorium with a dramatic program of repertoire appropriate for spooky season

With his work described as “An exacting and fascinating meeting of art, music and science” (Jazzwise) and “extraordinary listening experiences” (Westdeutsch Zeitung), composer, performer, and sound installation artist Matthew Goodheart interleaves live performance and immersive sound environments in a hybrid world of composition, improvisation, interactive electronics, and spatial sound installation. Utilizing a technique known as “reembodied sound,” in which instruments are actuated via tactile transducers so that they appear to sound autonomously, he investigates the interrelationship between acoustics, space, sound production, and technology. In this concert, he will present a set of recent solo works combining transducer-actuated metal percussion and piano in an evolving series of eclectic and ethereal soundscapes.
