Copland’s Concerto swings in the hands of New York Philharmonic’s brilliant Principal Clarinet, Anthony McGill, while the DSO and DSO Chorus, led by Fabio Luisi, enthrall with a quintessential Romantic subject: the battle for the soul of Faust. You’ll recognize the protagonists by their music — heroic, lyrical, infernal — and be moved by the tenor solo and all-male “mystical chorus” exalting woman-eternal.

The Symphony No. 3 is unmistakably Rachmaninoff — with soaring melodies, shattering climaxes, and the dark rumblings of his signature Dies irae from the Mass for the Dead. But once the clouds have lifted, the Symphony ends in jubilant, life-affirming exclamations. Also on the program, Barber’s celebratory organ toccata (watch for some fancy footwork on the Lay Family Concert Organ) and a new work that honors JFK upon the 60th anniversary of his passing. Inspired by President Kennedy’s speech eulogizing poet Robert Frost at Amherst College in 1963, the DSO will be one of the first orchestras to perform this work following its world premiere this summer.



Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 3

In a tongue-in-cheek quip, Brahms described his Second Piano Concerto as “a tiny, tiny pianoforte
concerto, with a tiny, tiny wisp of a scherzo.” Approaching the dimensions of a symphony, full of
nobility and brilliance, the monstrously difficult work will be performed by the world-renowned Austrian pianist, Rudolf Buchbinder.

Schumann fancies himself a “composer,” while Brahms is a “giftless bastard” and Claude Debussy is simply ugly. Aleksey Igudesman has created a sardonic mix of the most evil music critiques of the last centuries written about some of the greatest works of music. Equipped with a frivolous potpourri of musical insults, John Malkovich slips into the role of the evil critic who believes the music of Beethoven, Chopin, Prokofiev and the likes to be weary and dreary.

Bringing songs and stories from the “Man in Black” to the stage in a way that audiences haven’t seen or heard before. With video of Johnny from episodes of The Johnny Cash TV Show projected on a screen above the stage, a live band and singers will accompany him in perfect sync. This concert experience will showcase iconic performances from the TV show and highlight the spirit of the legend by revisiting some of his memorable words and anecdotes. Cash will perform some of his biggest hits, including “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire, “And “I Walk the Line,” and share stories of people he met along the way whose causes he championed–the working man from all walks of life. Plus, onstage male and female singers will split vocal duties performing their own takes on Cash hits. The music never stops in this concert event!
