Inspired by the 2005 film Joyeux Noël, this powerful portrayal of peace amidst conflict captures the real-life Christmas truce of 1914, during World War I.

Following acclaimed sold-out performances in Paris’s Cité de la musique, Brussels and Lisbon, French-American cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton and pianist Sarah Rothenberg bring Wieder-Atherton and filmmaker Chantal Akerman’s D’Est en musique to the US, in conjunction with a retrospective of Akerman’s films at the Museum of Modern Art and a screening at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

A rare Houston performance from Grammy Award-winning classical vocalist Julia Bullock, admired both for her critically-acclaimed performances at the Metropolitan Opera as well as original, boundary-breaking recitals of astounding intensity. Appearing here with frequent collaborator and virtuosic soloist Conor Hanick, these two luminous musicians shine their collective light one of the vocal masterpieces of the 20th century.

Merz Trio returns with another powerful program. Sandwiched between Beethoven’s Piano Trio (a conversation of tension and dark lyricism) and Dvořák’s Piano Trio (an emotionally rich venture of intense inner conflict) we find  the sweet center: Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (“Transfigured Night”), a  journey of tonal richness from D minor to D major, reviving harmonic language reminiscent of both Wagner and Brahms.

Enthralling, gorgeously written, and incredibly heartrending, this stunning adaptation of Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winner Toni Morrison’s debut novel centers three young Black girls as they strive to make sense of abuse and hate.

The GRAMMY® winning saxophonist and composer, Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón returns to Houston for a special performance at the Hobby Center presented by Kinetic Ensemble and Aperio, Music of the Americas. In this one-night only event, Zenón joins Houston’s own Billboard Chart-topping Kinetic Ensemble for the premiere of a new version of Yo Soy La Tradición, a suite of eight songs for saxophone and string orchestra based upon his 2018 album of the same name. This evening-length work has been described as an “imaginative and heartfelt tour” of Zenón’s native Puerto Rico, which he originally recorded just two days after Hurricane Maria made its landfall on the island.

Each of the eight pieces showcases a different cultural tradition, ranging from Germán Rosario’s songwriting in the Jibaro tradition, which Zenón sets as a fugue, to the religious tradition of “La Promesa,” represented by a harmonic meditation of three, simultaneously-improvising cellists. As a whole, this captivating work “blurs lines between jazz, classical and Puerto Rican folk music.”
