When civil unrest wracks Rome as the famine-ravaged underclass battle the ruling elite, a war hero steps into the spotlight to serve his nation—only to turn on it and seek its overthrow. Shakespeare’s rarely produced tragedy comes to visceral life in the intimacy of OSF’s Thomas Theatre, helmed by visionary director and OSF Associate Artistic Director Rosa Joshi in a powerful, movement-focused production featuring a cast of female and non-binary actors. Portland Center Stage (PCS) is thrilled to present "PETE's a seagull," a captivating new production by the Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble (PETE). This innovative performance is scheduled to run from June 27 to July 13, 2024, in the intimate Ellyn Bye Studio, located at 128 NW Eleventh Ave, Portland, OR 97209.

"PETE's a seagull" is not just a play; it's an experience that intertwines love letters, elegies, and the essence of theatrical creation and deconstruction. It invites audiences to reflect on the role of artists in the world and the transformative power of theater. The production promises a unique blend of dead birds, beating hearts, and moments of madness or reprieve, making it a must-see for theater enthusiasts.

The play is a result of PETE's decade-long exploration of new translations of Chekhov's works, drawing on Štĕpán Šimek’s translation of "The Seagull" and the writing of company member Chris Gonzalez. Directed by Rebecca Lingafelter, the performance features a talented cast including Jacob Coleman, Cristi Miles, Maureen Porter, Damaris Webb, Roo Welsh, Amber Whitehall, and Ken Yoshikawa. The design team comprises Jenny Ampersand, Miranda K Hardy, Peter Ksander, Trevor Sargent, and Mark Valadez, with stage management by Kristina Mast and production management by Molly Gardner.

PETE has been a dynamic force in the performance community since 2011, creating original devised works and new plays that have been celebrated for their inventiveness and impact. "PETE's a seagull" builds on this legacy, offering an engaging and thought-provoking theatrical experience.

The almost incomprehensible genius of his “Great Fugue” has powered every genre of music since—from classical to jazz, Motown to heavy metal. We’ll explore equally fiery works by Brahms and Finnish composer Sebastian Fagerlund, inspired by the musical bonfire Beethoven ignited. After the Grosse Fuge, music would never be the same.
