Opera North is thrilled to present its first-ever performances of Giuseppe Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra," a riveting opera set in 14th-century Genoa, filled with political intrigue and personal tragedy. This concert staging event will take place from April 24 to May 24, 2025, across various prestigious venues including St Georges Hall in Bradford, Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, The Glasshouse in Gateshead, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Hull City Hall, and the Southbank Centre.

"Simon Boccanegra" tells the compelling story of a former pirate turned people's champion, Simon Boccanegra, and his decades-long feud with political rival and nobleman, Jacopo Fiesco. The twist in their tale comes from the deep family ties they share, with one being the father and the other the grandfather of Amelia, adding layers of love, loss, and reconciliation to the narrative. The opera, which premiered in 1857 and was later revised in 1881 by Verdi and librettist Arrigo Boito, is celebrated for its Shakespearean drama and contains Verdi’s passionate plea for peace and unity, especially in its famous Council Chamber scene.

The cast includes Roland Wood as Simon Boccanegra, Brindley Sherratt as Jacopo Fiesco, Andrés Presno as Gabriele Adorno, and Mandla Mndebele as Paolo Albiani, under the baton of conductor Antony Hermus and direction by PJ Harris. This production follows Opera North's acclaimed concert stagings of other large-scale Italian classics, promising an unmissable event for opera enthusiasts.

The opera will be sung in Italian with English subtitles, ensuring it is accessible to a wide audience. The running time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. 27’52” is made for six dancers, who form three duets. When the ballet was created, four dancers from the original cast were inspired by various poems in the creation process. Quotes from these poems are also included in the work. The ballet was developed through a unique collaboration between choreographer and composer, as German composer Dirk Haubrich created the music specifically for this piece.

Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine, who demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather, King Herod, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife, Herodias, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. Derrick Inouye conducts two performances in May.

In this not-to-be-missed program, the FWSO’s own Principal Clarinetist Stas Chernyshev steps to the front of the stage for Mozart’s sublime clarinet concerto, a work of utter elegance and refinement written for a fellow freemason. An all-Mozart affair, the performance also includes the madcap Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and the Symphony No. 39, which opens with one of the grandest fanfares in the canon before launching into a grand, courtly affair that has captivated the ear for more than 200 years.

Where love is concerned, too much is not even enough. Rosina is young, clever, and wealthy, but her greedy guardian desires her and her fortune for himself. Using her wits to outsmart him and find her true love, she enlists Figaro, the mischievous and well-connected local barber, who has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Plans go awry (resulting in several close shaves) against the backdrop of Gioachino Rossini’s iconic score as romance and a little old-fashioned trickery combine in one of the best-loved comedies of all time.

Two lovers are thwarted by the power-hungry Scarpia while the fiery prima donna Tosca is pushed past sanity when her only hope for freedom means submitting to the evil Baron’s lecherous desires.

Jader Bignamini leads Ravel’s nod to the past and French pianist Bertrand Chamayou has the “big technique that you need,” (Seattle Times) to play Ravel’s piano concertos back-to-back. Composed at the same time, the two magnificent works combine Ravel’s flair for orchestral color with pianistic virtuosity and the influence of jazz. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol began as a feature for the violin but ended up a showpiece for the entire orchestra.
