Puccini’s timeless tragedy returns with three dynamic duos as the bohemian lovers. Sopranos Federica Lombardi, Anita Hartig, and Elena Stikhina alternate as the heartbreaking seamstress Mimì, and tenors Matthew Polenzani, Stephen Costello, and Joseph Calleja share the role of the love-struck poet Rodolfo. Sopranos Olga Kulchynska, Heidi Stober, and Kristina Mkhitaryan and baritones Adam Plachetka and Alexey Markov are the tempestuous lovers Musetta and Marcello, and maestros Carlo Rizzi and Marco Armiliato take the podium to oversee Franco Zeffirelli’s magnificent production.

Following his heroic performance as Siegfried in the Met’s 2019 Ring cycle, dashing Austrian tenor Andreas Schager returns as the knight Tannhäuser in Wagner’s ravishing opera of love, lust, and redemption. Soprano Elza van den Heever is the pure and virtuous princess Elisabeth, alongside mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as the tempting goddess of love, Venus. Maestro Donald Runnicles takes the podium for Otto Schenk’s classic production, which also features baritone Christian Gerhaher in his Met debut as Tannhäuser’s companion knight Wolfram and bass Georg Zeppenfeld as Landgraf Hermann.

Susanna Mälkki conducts Musorgsky’s musical representations of a close friend’s artwork, as well as Bartók’s exploration of Romanian folk music. Hailed by The Washington Post as an “extraordinary visionary,” Pierre-Laurent Aimard solos in Ligeti’s Piano Concerto, inspired by a variety of cultures. Plus, cimbalom player Jenő Lisztes performs a solo arrangement of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.

Featuring one of Sondheim's most celebrated and personal scores, and moving backwards in time, Merrily charts the turbulent relationship between three lifelong friends — played by Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez — and traces every milestone of their lives for nearly two decades as they navigate success, show business and unbreakable bonds.“It’s our time, breathe it in; worlds to change and worlds to win.”

Carnegie Hall audiences last heard Sergei Babayan in jaw-dropping concerts with his protégé, Daniil Trifonov. The veteran pianist returns in a recital comprising some of his most-celebrated repertoire. It begins with Liszt’s second ballade, as notable for its aching restraint as its thunderous eruptions; short piano works by Rachmaninoff, a composer especially close to Babayan’s heart; and a fantasia by Vladimir Ryabov, which, after a recent performance by Babayan, was called “the most startling discovery of the evening … something strikingly novel” (Bachtrack). The second half of the concert takes on a softer tone, with Schubert’s serene Piano Sonata in G Major bookended by Liszt’s piano transcriptions of songs by Schubert.

This special concert includes a short film by award-winning documentarian Sam Green; the New York premieres of Carnegie Hall co-commissioned works by Michael Gordon and Gabriella Smith; and an extraordinary new “Sunrise Jam” version of Terry Riley’s Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector for 50 musicians.

Kronos Quartet: Five Decades

Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason is one of classical music’s biggest rising stars. He has sold out multiple Carnegie Hall performances alongside his sister, Isata, and he now returns with essentials of the cello repertoire and several recent additions to it. Experience one of the legendary J. S. Bach cello suites and a 20th-century piece it inspired. Enjoy Britten’s Cello Suite No. 1 and a sonata by the endlessly resourceful guitarist Leo Brouwer. Be one of the first to hear exciting new works by two next-generation composers from the United Kingdom, each of which received its world premiere by Kanneh-Mason at the Royal Academy of Music.

Historian John Monsky returns for a powerful Veterans Day performance. Celebrated Broadway vocalists join “New York’s hometown orchestra” (The New York Times) for music from the era as Monsky applies his signature blend of meticulously researched history and rare archival film and photography to this groundbreaking exploration of World War I, fought, in large part, to “make the world safe for democracy.”

November 1918:  The Great Gatsby and the Great War

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the ever-evolving Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble in its first concert of the season. Hear the Serenade for Winds in E-flat Major, a sweet and warmly scored early work by a teenaged Richard Strauss. Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout follows, mixing elements from Western classical and Andean folk music traditions into a riveting whole. The program closes with another folk-infused masterpiece: Copland’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Appalachian Spring Suite, performed by a 13-piece chamber ensemble, as it was originally scored.

The Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble

The American Composers Orchestra premieres music by hundreds of today’s top composers, and no two concerts are alike. In this program, they offer a wide-ranging musical testament to humanity’s bold endeavors. Works include a multimedia rendering of a famed (and ultimately doomed) expedition to the North Pole, written by Nina C. Young; a world premiere by composer and jazz pianist Guillermo Klein; a world premiere by George Lewis, one of the leading exponents of experimental music today; an Augusta Read Thomas composition originally written to precede Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony; and a world premiere by Jack Hughes.

Maxim Vengerov and Polina Osetinskaya return after a “mesmerizing” and “brilliant” 2022 performance (The Strad). The first half of the concert features music written for 19th-century violin icon Joseph Joachim, starting with Clara Schumann’s rarely performed Three Romances. Also included are the movement that Brahms contributed to the “FAE” Sonata, assembled in collaboration with Robert Schumann and Albert Dietrich; and Robert Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 3, in which the composer “completed” the FAE by adding new movements in place of his partners’. The second half of the concert features a series of miniatures and a powerful sonata by Prokofiev, which he brilliantly re-composed for violin.

Experience the Carnegie Hall debut of Schaghajegh Nosrati, a phenomenal pianist praised by Sir András Schiff for her “astonishing clarity, purity, and maturity.” J. S. Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue makes for an exciting opening, as “Nosrati is a captivating Bachian; rhythmically infectious, supremely intelligent” (BBC Music Magazine). Beethoven’s beautiful “Pastoral” piano sonata, an uncommonly spacious work, follows. The concert’s second half begins with a spritely, fleet-fingered Haydn fantasia, while Alkan’s wonderfully varied (and woefully underperformed) piano symphony ends the performance in thrilling fashion.

Grammy and Gramophone Award winner Sir Bryn Terfel performs a distinctive mix of the music for which he is so renowned. The first half of the program includes the sounds of home in traditional Welsh songs and works by 19th- and 20th-century Welsh and British composers. The second half of the program features a particularly beautiful collection of songs by Schubert, Robert Schumann, and Debussy, as well as a heartfelt selection from Les Misérables. Exquisite instrumental interludes put a welcome spotlight on harpist Hannah Stone (recently the Official Harpist to the Prince of Wales) and pianist Annabel Thwaite.

Recitals by pianist Sir András Schiff are always some of the most eagerly awaited events at Carnegie Hall, and he continues to find new ways to dazzle audiences. His well-publicized reliability for greatness—he “commands international respect as a paragon of refinement and musical integrity”—sometimes overshadows the fact that he “has an impish streak and likes to surprise” (The New York Times). Schiff’s recitals highlight both sides of this artistry, balancing encyclopedic mastery and interpretive curiosity to offer new perspective on the piano repertoire’s greatest works.

The Met premiere stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia Grimaldi, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to lead a spellbinding new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mysterious and magical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage.
