From Joan Tower’s bold, vibrant fanfare through Schubert’s beloved "Unfinished" Symphony, this thought-provoking and beautiful concert invites us to explore what defines us. Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, our 2021–22 season Artist-in-Residence, premieres a song cycle by American Joel Thompson and is joined by Broadway-film-cabaret performer Justin Vivian Bond for a set of songs that delve into questions of identity.

Strauss brings out layers of meanings in these Romantic poems, here sung by soprano Golda Schultz following her breakout Met appearance in Porgy and Bess (“a newcomer who simply has everything,” The Financial Times). Santtu-Matias Rouvali, in his first Philharmonic appearances since his acclaimed 2019 debut, also conducts Tchaikovsky’s emotionally charged, melodically rich Fifth, and new sounds courtesy of “textural magician” Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (WQXR.com)

Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, our 2021–22 season Artist-in-Residence, is the soloist in two song cycles: Berlioz’s glorious Les Nuits d’été and the premiere of Gregory Spears’s setting of Tracy K. Smith texts. Jaap van Zweden conducts this examination of identity that opens with music from Beethoven’s opera about a woman who disguises herself as a man to save her husband and closes with an expansive expression of love by 1980s underground icon Julius Eastman.

The New York Philharmonic returns to Carnegie Hall with Adolphus Hailstork’s rousing portrait of a port city, a virtuoso concerto, and a symphony by a Finnish icon. John Adams’s jazz-influenced concerto calls on soloist Branford Marsalis’s ability to tap into the saxophone’s agility and sweetly lyrical voice. Sibelius expresses his love for the natural splendor of his homeland most beautifully in the finale’s depiction of 16 swans in full flight. Susanna Mälkki conducts.

Young People’s Concert: One Planet

This concert at Carnegie Hall includes Brahms’s quintessentially Romantic concerto that awes with its grand scale, passionate emotion, and muscular piano writing; Igor Levit, “one of the essential artists of his generation” (The New York Times), is the soloist. Music Director Jaap van Zweden conducts Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, which thrills with its virtuosity, vast palette of orchestral colors, and folk-dance rhythms.

Van Cliburn Competition winner Haochen Zhang performs Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, beloved from beginning to end, especially for its instantly recognizable second movement. Tugan Sokhiev also conducts Prokofiev’s most popular symphony, which the composer called “a hymn to free and happy Man,” and Lili Boulanger’s exquisite, Impressionistic miniature.

Haochen Zhang Performs Rachmaninoff

Gautier Capuçon brings “an uncanny sweetness of tone” (Gramophone) to Qigang Chen’s nostalgic reflection on childhood, first love, and other sweet firsts. Long Yu also conducts the opening of Rimsky-Korsakov’s lyrical epic and Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic Symphonic Dances, with a sonic palette that includes tubular bells and evocations of Russian Orthodox chant.

When Gustavo Dudamel conducts Schumann’s symphonies he is praised for “effusively bringing out all that was new and adventurous” in these works (Los Angles Times). The first of this two-week focus features the First, a paean to spring, and the Second, a depiction of hard-won affirmation and triumph. The concert also includes Gabriela Ortiz’s World Premiere exploring the connection between Robert Schumann and Clara, an eminent pianist and composer as well as his wife and muse.

Seong-Jin Cho brings “world-class technique, polished to a high sheen of expression” (Los Angeles Times) to Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, nicknamed Emperor for its regal temperament. Jaap van Zweden also conducts Shostakovich’s powerful symphony, which explores emotion without self-pity,  and Julia Perry’s Study for Orchestra, a piece that is at times edgy, lyrical, and even raucous.

The mighty walls and towering monuments of ancient Egypt once again fill the Met stage, as Verdi’s great spectacle returns. Soprano Latonia Moore—hailed for her performances in Porgy and Bess and Fire Shut Up in My Bones—stars as the Ethiopian princess torn between love and country, sharing the role with rising soprano Michelle Bradley. Mezzo-sopranos Anita Rachvelishvili and Olesya Petrova alternate as Aida’s implacable Egyptian counterpart Amneris, with tenors Brian Jagde and Marcelo Álvarez as the warrior Radamès, the object of both of their affections. Baritones George Gagnidze, Quinn Kelsey, and Luca Salsi portray Aida’s father, Amonasro, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn is the iron-fisted priest Ramfis. Maestro Paolo Carignani conducts.

David McVicar’s monumental production—created for the Met premiere of the original French version of Verdi’s gripping drama in the 2021–22 season—returns, now sung in Italian and starring an unbeatable cast of dramatic voices.

Umberto Giordano’s exhilarating drama returns to the Met repertory for the first time in 25 years. Packed with memorable melody, showstopping arias, and explosive confrontations, Fedora requires a cast of thrilling voices to take flight, and the Met’s new production promises to deliver. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva, one of today’s most riveting artists, sings the title role of the 19th-century Russian princess who falls in love with her fiancé’s murderer, Count Loris, sung by star tenor Piotr Beczała. Soprano Rosa Feola is the Countess Olga, Fedora’s confidant, and baritone Artur Ruciński is the diplomat De Siriex, with Met maestro Marco Armiliato conducting. Director David McVicar delivers a detailed and dramatic staging based around an ingenious fixed set that, like a Russian nesting doll, unfolds to reveal the opera’s three distinctive settings—a palace in St. Petersburg, a fashionable Parisian salon, and a picturesque villa in the Swiss Alps.

The opera that announced the young Mozart’s genius to the world returns to the Met stage, with acclaimed maestro Manfred Honeck making a notable company debut on the podium. A distinguished cast of leading Mozarteans comes together to bring the moving drama and dazzling arias to life, with tenor Michael Spyres in the title role of the ancient Cretan king, alongside mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as the noble prince Idamante and soprano Ying Fang as his conflicted beloved, Ilia. Soprano Federica Lombardi is the jealous Elettra, who loses her senses in a mad scene of virtuosic rage.

Idomeneo

Three captivating sopranos with many previous triumphs to their names—Nadine Sierra, Ermonela Jaho, and Angel Blue— star as the self-sacrificing courtesan Violetta, one of opera’s ultimate heroines. Tenors Stephen Costello, Ismael Jordi (in his Met debut), and Dmytro Popov share the role of her self-centered lover Alfredo, alongside baritones Luca Salsi, Amartuvshin Enkhbat (another debut), and Artur Ruciński as his disapproving father. Michael Mayer’s vibrant production also features three maestros: Daniele Callegari, Marco Armiliato, and Nicola Luisotti.

La Traviata

Yuja Wang brings her “distinct perspective” and “wizardly technique” (Chicago Tribune) to Liszt’s First Piano Concerto, a pianistic tour de force that takes your breath away. Jakub Hrůša also conducts two Central European neglected gems: Kodály’s colorful Concerto for Orchestra and Martinů’s richly textured First Symphony.
